1. What is the Bio-Washing Process?

Bio-washing is essentially a textile finishing process that utilizes enzymes to enhance the uniformity and appearance of fabrics. This method is primarily employed on cellulose-based materials, such as cotton, to provide more durable and lasting effects. This method is a biological way of giving a wet treatment to textiles. It is a finishing process applied to cellulose textiles that produces permanent effects with the help of enzymes.

The method adheres on enzymatic action (cellulase enzymes for cotton), which breaks down the tiny fibres of the fabric that lay on the surface, so that during washing can be eliminated. Enzyme action disintegrates these fine fibrils from the surface of this fabric, so it feels a lot softer and smoother. Garment processing with cellulase enzymes, which are natural proteins. They are a type of high molecular weight protein synthesized by living organisms that result from the catalysis of chemical reactions. The cellulases digest saccharides from cellulose chains in more accessible regions to hydrolyse. They are more efficient on the surface of the fibre where the cellulose chain is likely to be broken. In this case the hydrolysis (the chemical breakdown of a compound due to reaction with water) of the enzyme will make the protruding fibres unstable.


Look, this part is so technical that a non-science background person can definitely skip.  However, if you are stay excited, I am sure you won’t regret it. Continuing with the Bio-wash process, which occurs between the Fabric Bleaching process and before the Dyeing process. Bio-wash serves to enhance textile quality by minimizing fraying and inconsistencies in stitched garments. It effectively removes protruding threads and slobs from quilted fabrics, significantly reduces pilling, and softens the textile surface. As a result, garments acquire a more refined and seamless appearance. This process imparts a really softer and smoother feel and reduces fuzzy roughness or pilling tendency.

The enzyme reaction has to be terminated after the treatment (in case of finishing) to avoid any damage caused to the fabric due to the enzyme by means of enzyme inactivation. This is achieved using hot treatment of 80°C for 20 min(approx) or pH 11–12 (for reference, pH above 7 is basic and below 7 is considered to be acidic). So, this can be heat inactivation (at high temperature >70 °C for at least 20 minutes or short drying at 120°C), alkaline (pH >10), and a high salt environment critical for enzyme inhibition.

Cotton is like the surface of a piece of clothing if we magnify it. Now you see millions of fine, open fibre ends making it feel fuzzy or rough.

Before Bio-Washing: Fabric with lots of little sharp fibres pointing outwards.

During Bio-Washing: Tiny enzyme molecules (biological scissors if you will) are blended in water to the fabric. Enzymes that are designed to identify and digest only such fine, lax fibre-ends protruding out from the surface.

After Bio-Washing: Weak fibre ends, these are easily broken apart and washed with some mechanical action. And hence there is a cleaner, flatter, smoother fabric surface unaccommodated with fuzziness.


3. Classification of Bio-Finishing Process

Bio-finishing is a biological way of giving wet treatment to textiles. The main methods of bio-finishing include:

  • Enzymatic bio-finishing (responsible for enhancing fabric properties, appearance, and feel).
  • Finishing using naturally available biopolymers like chitosan and β-cyclodextrin (responsible for antimicrobial finishing treatments).
  • Finishing using aromatherapies like neem, rose, lavender, jasmine, and aloe vera (used to inculcate properties like anti-microbial, fragrance, a deep sleeping finish, and anti-inflammatory).

Other specific bio-finishing methods mentioned include enzymatic de-sizing, bio-scouring, bio-bleaching, bio-washing, bio-polishing, wrinkle-free effect, antimicrobial finish, and deep sleep finishing.
